Plan showing the separate living units

The two separate living units, one containing cooking/living and the other, sleeping and bathing, are in the tradition in Chihuahuan vernacular farm buildings out in the desert, on ranches and in hamlets. Separating the kitchen from other living areas has been a common building tradition in hot climates.

This practice is still applicable today as the bedrooms will benefit from not storing the heat from the kitchen and remain comfortable throughout the night. Traditionally, the separation of the two living components also served to ensure hygiene and serenity. The two living units are places slightly askew to each other. Slightly removed bedroom spaces are almost a guarantee of tranquility away from living room and dining activity. Mentally, the dweller can find comfort in actually retiring to a bedroom nest ever so slightly disconnected from the heart of the house. Also, in this climate, this subtle separation cools the house not only meteorologically but also psychologically.

Furthermore, the venturi principle of air constricted into a narrower space also cools it as it moves. This is ingenious, not only because of airflow advantages but it fits well under the canopy and ads excitement to the very experience of being in a space. This angle creates outdoor spaces of originality, unique little corners and pleasant spaces to place table and chairs for outdoor meals, and other activities. The outside under the canopy is additional roofed living space with skylights piercing the metal canopy and the earthen roofs. The airy canopy directs you towards views of the desert horizon.
